To give you an idea of the scale of the project R+R=Now, we just need to tell you who is involved: Robert Glasper on the piano, Terrace Martin on the saxophone, Christian Scott on the trumpet, Derrick Hodge on the bass, Justin Tyson on drums, and Taylor McFerrin on keyboard and electronics. Together, they are reimagining, maybe even rewriting, the rules of jazz, with swathes of hip-hop beats, electro textures and R&B groove. R+R=Now (Reflect + Respond = NOW) has been brought together by Robert Glasper for a one-off tour. The collective is inspired by Nina Simone’s words: “An artist’s duty is to reflect the times”. The six musicians have been friends and colleagues for years – now they’re combining their daring, their vision and their instinctive ability to shape the sound of a generation. These accomplished musicians aren’t limited to jazz – they have worked with Prince, Kendrick Lamar, Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder, Thom Yorke, Mos Def, Erykah Badu, Snoop Dogg and more.
