Cultural mediation: Music in all its forms

Montreux Jazz Talent Awards, Workshops, Projections, Jam Sessions and Academy: the Montreux Jazz Artists Foundation offers a wide variety of fascinating events, free of charge and open to all. Through these projects, the Festival seeks to encourage encounters between the artists and the public, the sharing of knowledge, and cultural exchanges.

WORKSHOPS

Intimate and always surprising, the workshops offer privileged access to the Festival artists, who reveal the secrets of their art. The 2019 workshops feature many of the the young artists from the stages of the Lab and the Club (Apparat, Chassol, Snarky Puppy, Jacob Collier, Braxton Cook (picture), José James).

Also on the program: the blues of Melvin Taylor, the gospel of the Blind Boys of Alabama, and the Brazilian melodies of Ivan Lins. A kids’ workshop is also being organized in collaboration with the Conservatoire Montreux-Vevey-Riviera.

MONTREUX JAZZ TALENT AWARDS

Twice nightly on the stage of the Coupole, the Montreux Jazz Talent Awards underscore different ways of imagining virtuosity and jazz in all its forms blending different cultures and sounds.

Selected by the Festival’s bookers, sixteen artists will be evaluated at a live performance by professional and amateur judges, then on video by an Artists Committee. This year’s Committee comprises artists closely tied to the Festival, including Stanley Clarke, Carl Craig, Chucho Valdès, and Chilly Gonzales.

PROJECTIONS

Six films and documentaries will be presented at the Cinema Hollywood, portraying artists (Quincy, Tribute to Karen Dalton, Sous le Donjon de Manu Le Malin) and cultural communities (Alternasuisse, Freedom Square and Back of the Moon, Gay Chorus Deep South).

MONTREUX JAZZ ACADEMY

The 5th Montreux Jazz Academy will take place during the second week of the Festival, with American trumpet player Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah as musical director and Wolfgang Flür (founding member of Kraftwerk) and Jacob Collier as mentors.

During this intensive week in residence, young artists selected by the Festival will enjoy the benefits of a veritable career launchpad. In addition to workshops, lectures on the music business, and jam sessions, the students and their mentors will prepare a final concert that will be presented on 11 July as the opener for Terence Blanchard.
