A new sensation from Johannesburg, singer Tyla has catapulted the South African musical style known as Amapiano onto the international scene. This highly percussive sub-genre of deep house was popularised by her hit ‘Water’, released in 2023. Accompanied by memorable choreography, the track went viral on TikTok and got the whole world dancing. In February 2024, Tyla won the Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance, making her the youngest African artist to win the prestigious award. Released in March 2024, her eponymous debut album has won international critical acclaim for its irresistible fusion of typical Amapiano sounds and R&B vocal melodies, inspired by Tyla’s heroines Aaliyah and Rihanna. The album includes collaborations with Tems, Becky G and Travis Scott.
