Kokoroko

Swiss exclusivity

Korokoko. The band’s name may seem random at first, but it actually has a deep and powerful origin, meaning “to be strong” in the language of the Urhobo people. This strength is undoubtedly reflected in the music of the group, who were selected in 2023 for the Montreux Jazz Artists Foundation residency. Comprising eight seasoned London-based musicians who share Afro-Caribbean roots, and led by trumpeter and singer Sheila Maurice-Grey, they harmoniously fuse to create jazz infused with Afrobeat and hip-hop, shaping an evocative and captivating sound. Their hit song ‘Abusey Junction’ is a perfect example. Undeniably, the real driving force behind Kokoroko is their all-female brass section.
