Ryan Hope (Gabriels)
Ryan Hope is a DJ and producer based in the mountains behind Palm Springs. He makes up one third of the critically acclaimed soul band Gabriels and runs the award winning creative studio Appraiser out of LA with composer and fellow bandmate Ari Balouzian.
Originally from Sunderland in the UK his journey in electronic music started at 21 while studying in Leeds being firmly part of the local afterparty scene playing the side rooms and afters of the city’s legendary nights Technique, BackToBasics, DirtyDisco, Asylum and others. He then moved to London where he began directing music videos eventually signing with Ridley Scott Associates as a filmmaker. He continued to be involved heavily in the house and techno scene in the city working with the Hypercolour crew and their labels working on releases from the likes of Maya Jane Coles, Jimmy Edgar and Kyle Hall. He was also resident DJ at their party at the legendary T-Bar in East London.
He put his first (and only) techno release out in 2015 anonymously as Gabriels on Adam Shelton and Subb-an’s One Records, a track called ‘Amethyst’ which was supported by BBC Radio One, Mixmag and many more.
Moving to LA to sign with Roman Coppola’s ‘The Directors Bureau’ as a director, Gabriels then became the iteration it is today with bandmates Jacob Lusk and Ari Balouzian with their first release ‘Loyalty’ debuting on R+S Records. Their critically acclaimed debut album ‘Angels and Queens’ was released in July this year and is currently being selected as one of the albums of the year in end of year charts.
Ryan stepped back into DJing this year and last month he joined Ste Roberts from Hypercolour on his Rinse FM show. His debut show on BBC Radio 6 is scheduled for Boxing Day as part of a series of Gabriels shows.
